travesía book design and promotion

A poignant bilingual YA graphic novel about a teenage girl's harrowing experience crossing the Mexico-US border. I created original illustrations and layouts for the front cover and interior spreads, as well as marketing and promotional material for the book launch.
3x3 Illustration Annual No.17, Honourable Mention
As part of our social media promotion for Travesía, we created short animated videos using audio from interviews with Gricelda, the book’s protagonist. The videos cover her own experiences crossing the Mexico-U.S. border and living in the United States, as well as her thoughts on how the immigration experience today differs from when she first arrived almost three decades ago. craigslist redesign

The craigslist brand is acclaimed by many for its purely functional interface design. However, over the years the site has developed a reputation among many users for being untrustworthy and frequented by scammers. I was tasked with finding a balance between updating the website’s aesthetics to make it comparable with reputable websites while still maintaining the brand’s authenticity.
I created colourful illustrations and a simple, straightforward layout to maintain the site’s approachability. To preserve brand authenticity, I kept the craigslist blue and purple colour palette and used the original wordmark and signature peace sign motif throughout the site.

Build a Biz Kids is a charity that develops progressive educational programming focused on teaching essential business skills to children and teens. I collaborated with the curriculum writer to design and develop this teaching resource for elementary school students.

washington black book cover

Washington Black by Esi Edugyan is a novel about Wash, a young enslaved man who escapes his Barbados plantation with Titch, an abolitionist and scientist who discovers Wash’s talents as a research assistant and illustrator. The reader follows Wash as he cultivates his artistic career after being abandoned by Titch.
The octopus in this cover design represents Wash’s genius and identity as a scientific illustrator. The hidden silhouettes of Wash following Titch represent the young man’s journey to freedom, and his obsession and disillusionment with his mentor.
